From their emergence from dens in spring until they feast on berries in the fall, grizzlies stay very active. They cover great distances while foraging on vegetation and digging up nutrient-rich roots. Grizzlies are often viewed along river banks and roadsides, where they can find plants, roots and salmon. By late August bears are gorging on ripe berries-gaining an average of one kg (over two pounds) per day-in preparation to spend more than half of the year in hibernation. |
